Putting “The Express” On Film

A movie company has been gathering details and scouting locations in Syracuse, for a bio-pic on the late SU football great Ernie Davis.

ernie-davis.jpegKnown as the “Elmira Express,” for his hometown and his unstoppable nature on the field, Davis died of leukemia after leading the the 1959 Orange to a national championship.

Dennis Quaid will co-star as Coach Ben Schwartzwalder, who had a close mentoring relationship with Davis. There’s been no announcement on who will play the football star.

Most of the filming is expected to be done in the Chicago area, but the company plans a few days of shooting on the SU campus, and plans to use special effects to re-create Archbold Stadium, the long-demolished football venue where Ernie Davis built his legend. It stood on the current site of the Carrier Dome.

Here’s what the Syracuse Post-Standard has to say about the project.

“The Express” may not be coming soon to a theater near you, but its producers promise, it is on the way.
