The wraps are off the Macerich Company’s plan to rebuild DeWitt’s Shoppingtown Mall: They’ll demolish the section of the shopping center between Dick’s Sporting Goods and Sears, leaving Sears free-standing, and fill the gap with an attractive line of stores and restaurants with exterior access.
They’ll also put in a new Erie Boulevard entrance with access to the parking garage, and generally give the whole place a fresh look as they make Shoppingtown a little bit smaller than it is now.
It’s said this has been in the works for five or six years, but now it’s all coming together and will be done by the end of next year. Contrast this with the Carousel Center expansion, which now seems ready to happen after being talked, bragged and speculated about for almost a decade.
Macerich may have dragged its feet, but it did not wear out its welcome.
