We told you a couple of months ago about his million dollar state lottery win, and his plea to be given his prize sooner. Wayne had lung cancer, and his payout of $50,000 a year over 20 years would come much too late to help prolong his life.
Wayne Schenk died Monday at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital in Syracuse, according to the Baird-Moore Funeral Home, which is handling the funeral arrangements.
“He is in a better place now. He was starting to suffer, and we didn’t want that,” longtime friend Nick Pascazi told The Daily Messenger of Canandaigua.
On April 4, Mr. Schenk married his longtime partner, Joan DeClerck, who was with him when he died. About 15 people attended the small wedding ceremony, he said.
Pascazi said Schenk made sure he could pass on his winnings to Joan.
The state lottery division decided it could not bend the rules for a dying man. Wayne Schenck, a former Marine, lived in Naples. He was 51 years old.
