Okay, who’s the better mother– Susan on “Desperate Housewives” or June on “Leave It To Beaver?” When you think about the gap of decades between the airing of those shows, and the issues they do and do not deal with, it’s a mind-boggling comparison.
Newspaper writer Rick Allen gets some help in dealing with it today, from a ubiquitous teacher and critic based in CNY.
The reigning moms of 21st-century TV? Among the top candidates today probably would be Lynette Scavo of “Desperate Housewives” and Lorelai Gilmore of “Gilmore Girls.”
Lynette is a supermom wannabe returning to the corporate world, and finding even that a difficult step.
“‘Desperate Housewives’ gets it,” says Robert Thompson of the Center for the Study of Popular Television at Syracuse University. “Lynette does spend time dealing with kids and their throw-up and problems. She really does what many parents recognize.”
We suspect that there are a few women who pick up parenting tips from TV sitcoms- it could be a useful source of ways to deal with the lighter issues of raising children. For more weighty problems, the best source is probably your own mother. Think about how she might have dealt with the dilemma and do the same thing- or maybe just the opposite, if the years have told you that mom (it’s almost heresy to say this) made a terrible mistake.
Even if she did, Mother’s Day is all about gratitude and- if necessary- forgiveness. If you’re fortunate enough to have a mom, and have her close by, get together and her celebrate on Sunday.
